SMILE has extended its support to the rural areas too. SMILE has adopted Panval Village at Ratnagiri (365 kms. from Mumbai). The village has a population of 1600 people. 95% of the people are very poor. The majority of the villagers make their living through farming. The school, ‘Zilla Parishad Marathi Shala’ has a strength of 158 students of which 26 belong to the schedule caste category. The children score upto 60% marks, they can do better if more facilities and opportunities are available for them. The school is able to run upto 7th std. only as they do not have funds and facilities to raise it to std. 10th level as a result of which children drop out of school after the 7th as they have to walk long distances to go to the higher school.
SMILE has already helped the school and village by way of setting up a library, computer laboratory, science laboratory, playground construction, renovation of the school building.
What has been observed is that the village and school authorities have high expectations that their children study well and become engineers, doctors, lawyers, military officers so, SMILE plans to further support them by –
  • Upgrading the school from 7th std. to 10th std. level of education
  • Set up of small scale business
  • Set up of technical school
  • Vocational training for women & girls
One of the achievements is that as SMILE started developing the school, in the year 2009 the school won the award for being the ‘Adarsh’ School (Best & Ideal School) in the village.
